FTTH (Fibre To The Home) access

Accessing RESTENA network services using FTTH (Fibre To The Home) technology

Challenges

To use the resources and services of the national research and education network (RESTENA network), access to the RESTENA network is essential. This access is most often implemented via cables, particularly high-performance fibre optics, between the technical infrastructures of the beneficiaries and the points of presence (PoPs) of the RESTENA network distributed throughout the country.

However, in some cases, direct access may be too costly, for example when the institution is located far from a point of presence. In this case, the RESTENA network is accessible via existing infrastructure managed by telecommunications operators.

Primarily set up for Luxembourg institutions, FTTH (Fibre To The Home) access is also available to individuals working in the education and research sectors in Luxembourg and living in the country.

Features

Thanks to conventions contracts concluded with four national telecommunications operators (Tango, POST Luxembourg, Visual Online and Mixvoip), the Restena Foundation offers FTTH access with a connection of up to 1 Gbit/s with unlimited volume.

By choosing from among the eligible offers, institutions benefiting from RESTENA network services have a solution that complements conventional network cable access. Thanks to these offers, the connection to the RESTENA network can be adapted to their technical and budgetary constraints.

For eligible individual users, FTTH access allows them to use all RESTENA services from their home office with complete peace of mind, including e-mail or the services of the Ministry of National Education/CGIE, such as SCOLARIA.

Have a question?

  • Faq
  • Why is the default port for sending e-mail from my electronic messaging blocked?

In an effort to limit the volume of SPAM originating from their network, some Internet Service Providers impose a restriction on their clients by blocking the default SMTP port (25) from sending messages to an SMTP server other than those which are part of their own network.

If the Restena Foundation is not your ISP, you may have trouble sending mail from our SMTP server ‘smtp.restena.lu’. In this case, open the settings of your mail software and change the SMTP port used for sending by replacing 25 (default) with 587. To make this change, view our user manual 'Configure your email access'.

Note: Users connected to the internet via the Restena Foundation’s ‘DSL/Fibre Access’ service and users of the Webmail service are not affected by this restriction.
