CyberDay.lu 2026: a 9th edition for cybersecurity

Security

For the nine-year running, Luxembourg stakeholders and experts shared useful recommendations and information on how best to protect oneself and deal with cyber threats at CyberDay.lu, an event being an integral part of the activities across Europe in October to promote digital security and cyber hygiene.

On 15 October 2026, the Restena Foundation held its ninth CyberDay.lu. This annual event dedicated to cybersecurity for research and education was also broadcasted live on the event website. The 2026 edition brought together around 110 participants, including BTS students from the Lycée Guillaume Kroll (LGK) in Esch-sur-Alzette. From Belval or their (home)office, everyone was made aware of the current cybersecurity issues.

The morning of presentations began with the opening speech from Remy Bertot, founder and CTO of Passbolt. During his speech, he highlighted, in particular, the behind-the-scenes aspects of the building and maintenance of an open-source security software. Key elements include balancing openness with security, responding to vulnerabilities, keeping users’ trust, and adapting to an increasingly complex legal and regulatory environment.

On the stage of the Skip Pavilion, cybersecurity specialists – Michel Lanners from LU-CIX, Steve Muller from BEE SECURE, Cédric Bonhomme and Michael Hamm, from Luxembourg House of Cybersecurity (Computer Incident Response Center Luxembourg - CIRCL) and Nesrine Chibaniet from Proximus Luxembourg – took turns sharing their insights and expertise. Three young cybersecurity talents – Denim Latić, Filipe Costa and Laura Bernardy, who work for the Restena Foundation, the University of Luxembourg and LU-CIX respectively – then joined the panel of experts. Together, they raised awareness and provided training for participants on a range of topics, including:

  • local Internet exchange points (IXPs), which, as well as being networking hubs, play a crucial role in national cyber defence;
  • the Global CVE (GCVE) allocation system, which enables independent numbering authorities to publish vulnerability identifiers autonomously whilst staying compatible with the CVE, CSAF and OSV systems, and makes vulnerability tracking transparent, traceable and operational;
  • open-source intelligence techniques, which not only enable the verification of the accuracy of online claims and images, but also shed light on the digital footprint that we all, as individuals, leave on the internet when we share content online;
  • network telescopes and their value for observing Internet background noise, scanning activity, botnet behavior, malicious probing, and misconfigurations;
  • the responsible and secure use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools when sharing academic work;
  • the importance of being aware of the security status of one’s surroundings;
  • instant messaging tools and the future of conversations and exchanged data;
  • the jargon used by cybercriminals to conceal their true intentions.

Alongside the conference, Women4Cyber Luxembourg and ESET Belgium and Luxembourg took their places in the exhibition area alongside BEE SECURE and Proximus Luxembourg. There, they provided a more detailed overview of their services and activities in the field of cybersecurity.

Europe rallied for cyber security

CyberDay.lu 2026 is organised in the framework of the European CyberSecurity Month (ECSM). This annual awareness campaign, organised by the European Cyber Security Agency (ENISA), the European Commission and the Member States, is being rolled out in Luxembourg through a national campaign coordinated by the Luxembourg House of Cybersecurity as part of the autumn edition of CYBERSECURITY Week Luxembourg (CSWL).

The European association GÉANT - managing the pan-European research network of which Restena is a member - also relays the European initiative to the research and innovation community in a campaign entitled ‘Small habits, Big impact’.
