RESTENA R&D Engineer wins International Award for eduroam project
Thursday, May 22nd 2014 – The RESTENA Foundation is proud to announce that this year’s Community Award has honoured one of his leading R&D Engineers, Stefan Winter, for his dedicated work in helping develop the eduroam service and technology.
The Awards ceremony took place in Dublin during the TERENA Networking Conference (TNC), which is one of the largest and most prestigious European research networking conferences. TNC gathers more than 650 participants, from all major European networking and research organisations, universities and some key industry representatives. The Community Award is organized by TERENA and GÉANT and is designed to show gratitude and respect to teams or individuals who have shared their ideas, expertise and time with the community.
“We are delighted for Stefan Winter and proud that his work has been recognised at a global level by such a large panel of experts”, explains Antoine Barthel, Director at RESTENA. “Stefan joined the Foundation in 2004 and has completely led RESTENA's R&D work for eduroam, the ground-breaking secure roaming connectivity service. The fact that today, eduroam has spread to over 50 countries globally, with more than 5,000 locations in Europe alone, where researchers, students and teachers can securely access the Internet while away from their home institution, is a concrete proof of the success of the project”.
Through his commitment in the GÉANT project and the TERENA Task Force on Mobility and Network Middleware, Stefan Winter has managed to lead standardisation work, strive for federated solutions, propose and develop tools for statistics collection and the universal eduroam configuration tool. He is an author and co-author of several important Internet Drafts and RFCs that will lead the way for eduroam in the future. He has also recently led a global community effort to understand the impact of the Heartbleed security issue, and to secure the eduroam RADIUS infrastructure from such attacks.
“Stefan has been very active in the research and education networking community. The NREN Stefan works for, RESTENA, represents a very small country, but, by supporting Stefan in his work, the organisation and Stefan have both made a proportionally huge contribution to community collaboration and the development of eduroam”, conclude the Judges of the 2014 Community Award.
